money & justice - the tort reform debate
7/24/02
Section A, Page 5

Professions of 174 members of the Mississippi House and Senate:

Attorneys -- 37

Business -- 55

Real estate appraiser/broker -- 12

Insurance -- 12

Farmers -- 16

Government -- 9

Funeral home directors -- 5

Pharmacists -- 4

Physicians -- 2

Other -- 40

The list of professions is not an exact science. For instance, there are some members who have law degrees, but do not practice, and there are some members who are retired, but still list a type of business as their profession. And technically, an independent insurance agent, a funeral home director or a farmer could be listed as a businessman. But the effort was made to further define the professions of members of the Legislature. The list of other professions includes a wide array of jobs from consultants to full-time legislators to retirees. Some members list more than one profession. For instance, Rep. Randy "Bubba'' Pierce is both an attorney and accountant.
