HICKORY FLAT - There are many great aspects to living in a small town like Hickory Flat. Residents have smaller commutes, low-crime rates and a sense of community; amongst other things. However, there are also some bad aspects that comes with living in any small town in Mississippi. Residents must sometimes travel far distances to attain various services and goods that are not offered locally. Some residents have taken action to this problem and started going into business for themselves.
Local business owner, Judy Sullivan got her start in the embroidery business, after embroidering from her home for many years, while also working full-time jobs, being a wife and mother, Sullivan decided to open her very on store. 3-Strings Attached was opened on July 8, 2017. Sullivan owns and operates this business with her daughter Kim Graves and her granddaughter Judy Dixon, which is where she gets the “three” in her store name. Other family members help Sullivan in her store, like her son-in-law Jerry Graves.
3 Strings Attached offers embroidery, car decals, tanning bed services, tanning and lotions, spray tans, heat transfer, jewelry, home decor, holiday gifts and much more. Customers are able to purchase items that were not recently unavailable to them in the area.
When talking of her reasoning for opening Sullivan says, “I always wanted to open my own business. I had an embroidery machine at home so I started working on stuff for people and I loved doing it. Eventually business picked up so much that it became too much to do from home. So I decided to open here." Sullivan says that the response from the community has been a good one so far. She says, “We’ve been busy and have seen a lot of support from the community.”
Sullivan said that when they first opened the store they started offering a lot of different things and the community responded very well to it so they keep it around, hence the wide variety.
She also talks of the love of working with her family. “I love every minute of working along side my daughter. She quit her job of 22 years to help me at the store and I am so thankful for her,” said Sullivan.
Her daughter, Karen says, “I’m just proud of my mom and how she followed her dreams in opening this store.”
