BLUE MOUNTAIN • R'Daztiny Harris needs no introduction when it comes to high school girls basketball in the Northeast Mississippi area. But Harris introduced herself anyways to the Blue Mountain Lady Cougars on Tuesday night.
Harris dropped a game-high 32 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the Lady Rebels rolled over the Lady Cougars, 57-28.
The star senior wasted no time pouring in the points. The Lady Rebels jumped out to a 19-2 lead by the end of the first quarter behind Harris' 13 points and full-court pressure on defense. With Blue Mountain scoring the first four points of the second quarter, a pair of jumpers from freshman Madison Weeks and five more points from Harris lifted Hickory Flat to a 20-point lead by the 2:19 mark of the second.
Up 28-13 in the third, Harris split the lane for a basket plus the foul. The next possession, Abby Tatum scored her first points on a jumper, followed by another layup from Harris. Blue Mountain responded with a score but Harris connected on her lone three-pointer with 3:13 left. Senior Alex Pickens scored on a layup with seven ticks left to take a 43-17 lead into the fourth quarter.
Harris and fellow senior Corlilla Burnside matched each other in the final quarter with six points apiece and Tatum added another basket.
The win places the Lady Rebels at 2-0 on the season. Hickory Flat returns to action Friday at Jumpertown. Following Friday's contest, the girls take the court again on Saturday at the Bank of Pontotoc Shootout at Pontotoc High School. The Lady Rebels will play Itawamba AHS at 10:15 a.m.
