Joe Brigance Park was the host of the Dizzy Dean under 8 South State Tournament June 27-30. The Houston Park and Rec Department under the direction of John Gravat did a great job in hosting this tournament with 17 teams.
The Houston National All Stars under 8 team finished in 4th place with wins over Calhoun County, Choctaw County, Houston American, Newton County, Caledonia, Columbus American, before losing to Starkville National All Stars. They lost their first game to eventual State Champion Starkville American All Stars. They reeled off six wins in losers bracket before being eliminated. The Starkville American All Stars won the South State championship before winning the Overall State Championship. The Starkville National All Stars were South State Runner-ups.
The Houston American All Stars had a win over Calhoun County with losses to West Point and Houston National All Stars in the Dizzy Dean under 8 South State Tournament.
The Houston National All Stars under 10 team won the Dizzy Dean under 10 North State Tournament Championship help at JP Hudson Park in Batesville. They won the tournament undefeated with wins over Horn Lake, Clarksdale, Batesville, and Clarksdale again in the finals. This was a major accomplishment for these players. They finished Dizzy Dean under 10 State Runner-ups to Clarksdale.
The Houston All Stars under 12 team participated in the Dizzy Dean under 12 South State Tournament held in Columbus. They played three games losing all three to Choctaw County, Mantachie, and Caledonia. The Starkville All Stars won the South State Championship defeating Newton County in the championship game. The Grenada Recreation All Stars won the Overall State Championship.
This wraps up the summer baseball and softball season for the Houston Park and Rec Department. It was a great summer for these players.
