Special to the Chickasaw Journal
It’s official. Myrtle will begin its football program this fall after the Mississippi High School Activities Association approved the request on Thursday.
“Everybody is excited,” said Myrtle assistant principal Justin Hollis, who will serve as the Hawks’ coach. “The community is fired up, these kids can’t wait.”
Myrtle – which competes in Class 1A in all current sports – began taking steps towards a team in 2015 as parents organized a group to gauge interest.
The Hawks will field a junior high team in 2016, then add a junior varsity team in 2017 and 2018.
Myrtle will add a varsity team for 2019.
For now, the Hawks will play at the BNA Sportsplex in New Albany.
The first game for Myrtle is already set – a home junior high contest against Walnut on Aug. 30.
