OKOLONA – With basketball season in the books, it’s now baseball season in the little city that does big things, Okolona head coach Martavious Ford, in his first season, is expecting big things.
The Vardaman Lady Rams have been on the steady climb since head coach Josh Hegwood took over the program. And with fast-pitch season upon, Hegwood believes that this may be his most talented team to date.
The Houston Lady Hilltoppers achieved their ultimate goal last season. The captured the state championship, and with the title win, the Houston softball culture has changed.
HOUSTON – Houston baseball enters a new era this season as Brian Goodman steps in to replace the departing Scott Gann, and for Goodman, his first goal this season is to continue the success that Gann maintained at Houston.
What a big, crazy and exciting sports week it has been. Basketball season is in the books and now the focus shifts to spring sports. We’ll get into that and a little more this week, so let’s get to it.
JACKSON – The Okolona Chieftains wanted to go back to the 1A state title game. To get there they had to get through the West Lowndes Panthers in the semifinals and on the back of Jacorrious Stanfield, the Chieftains defeated the Panthers 65-55.
JACKSON – As the Okolona Chieftains exited their locker room on Thursday night, tears were abundant. Disappointment stained the eyes of the Okolona players and coaches as their attempt at a second straight 1A state title fell short, and the East Marion Eagles defeated Chieftains 58-53.
HOUSTON – The Lady Toppers were back in action on the softball diamond on Tuesday night as they battle the Tupelo Lady Wave for the second time in three games. And just like the previous matchup, Houston prevailed 7-2.
What a week, what a week. This past week was full of action with basketball, baseball and softball all in full swing. We’ll tackle some of that here so let’s get started.
OKOLONA – The goal all year long for the Okolona Chieftains hoops team has been simple: repeat as state champions. On Tuesday night, that goal got much more realistic as the Chieftains punched their ticket to Jackson with a 78-60 win over Simmons.
The defending 3A state champion Houston Lady Hilltoppers began their title defense this week. And in two games against top notch opponents, Tupelo and East Union, the Lady Toppers came out 2-0 in the week.
JACKSON – It took a few minutes for the defending 1A champs to find their groove, but the Okolona Chieftains sped ahead in the second quarter and never looked back.
OKOLONA – After rain washed out the original plan of a Saturday night round two matchup for Okolona, the Chieftains tipped off their second round game against West Union at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
VARDAMAN – It’s playoff time in high school hoops, and after success in the district tournament, the Vardaman Lady Rams found themselves hosting in the first round last week against the Coffeeville Lady Pirates where it is win or go home. And the Vardaman girls backed it up Friday with a 42-…
