Earlier Monday, the Taliban defiantly proclaimed that Afghans were ready to lay down their lives in the confrontation over bin Laden.

The United States called Sunday night's airstrikes a success, saying military installations and terrorist training camps were prime targets. Britain, which took part in the raids, said some of the camps were apparently empty, but that hitting them deprived bin Laden's al-Qaida network accused of carrying out the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the United States of some of its bases.

The allies launched military operations to punish Afghanistan's hardline Taliban rulers for harboring bin Laden and his network of terrorist camps.
