Tupelo native to star in 'Scandal'

Tupelo native Ashley Dulaney, 26, is an actress now living in Los Angeles. The Tupelo High and Ole Miss alum just landed her first big break on an episode of the ABC drama “Scandal.” Her episode, called “Say Hello to My Little Friend,” airs at 9 p.m. Thursday. She answered questions from the Daily Journal’s Sheena Barnett.

Q. Describe being on the set of “Scandal.”

A. “Scandal” was beyond amazing. I have loved the show since it began, so being brought in to audition was wonderful. It was such a cool experience stepping on to a set that I had seen so many times while watching the show. My lines were with Joshua Malina, who plays David Rosen, so I spent most of my time talking with him, but when I wrapped Kerry Washington came over to meet me. She was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. I had always heard wonderful things about her while working with people who have met her, but I was so happy to see that she surpassed even that.

Q. What’s it like being a young actress in Hollywood?

A. Hollywood is very interesting. In the three-and-a-half years I’ve been out here I still feel like I am constantly learning about this world that I moved into.

In Hollywood I feel like almost everyone is trying to do something inside the industry and although I’m sure that can feel very daunting to some, I found it very comforting and exciting. People tend to focus on how many broken dreams they see, when in reality, it’s inspiring to see how many people are so passionate about what they are doing. I come from an incredible family that is supportive and loving, so as cliche as that sounds, I think that it took a lot of the pressure off of me and I was able just enjoy this part of my life and do what makes me happy.

Q. What are you currently working on, and what are some of your big acting goals and aspirations?

A. The next two things I’m really excited about are the series “Miss Mustard Glade,” which was sponsored by Subway and is a very funny take on pageant life in a small town. It will be premiering at South by SouthWest in 2014 and it was such a funny project to be part of. I’m also set to begin shooting an indie film in the early part of next year that will be shot in Kentucky.

On goals and aspirations, the only thing I really know is I want to keep working.

I feel incredibly blessed to be given the opportunities I have already experienced and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.
