TUPELO – Gospel music comes in all styles, but it all serves one purpose.

The diverse styles of gospel music will be celebrated Sunday at the Link Centre’s Monthly Music Mix concert. Gospel performers such as Zell Long, Rev. Will Rogers, the Blackland Gospel Trio, Catherine McMahan, the Martin Luther King Crusaders and Pontotoc Apostolic Church’s Deanna Myhand and Melinda Randolph are a few of the performers on the roster.

For Mattie Richardson Fox, Ella Vaughn and Lerine Brim, three members of the Martin Luther King Crusaders, gospel music is in their blood.

The group, which has members in both Tupelo and Batesville, started in 1968 after King’s assassination.

“We were just brainstorming, what can we do to honor such a man?” Fox said.

Members have changed over the years, but the group has always been active and has performed throughout the region.

The group also gives two scholarships, which next year will be increased from $500 to $1,000, to students in Tupelo and Batesville who are going to college to study music.

Fox and her fellow Crusaders said they can’t imagine their lives without gospel music.

“It’s soul-stirring to me. It’s me. It’s me because I’m not ashamed of the gospel and the Lord. What we do is not for us. It’s for him,” Fox said. “We don’t know any other kind of music.”
