TUPELO – Cedar Grove Pentecostal Church is hosting its first fall bazaar and bake sale Saturday and organizers are hoping to make it an annual event.
The main focus will be on food – frozen casseroles and soups, fresh cakes, pies and candies, homemade breads and canned goods.
“We’re expecting to have a lot of people and a lot of food,” said Pat Wright, one of the organizers. “We’re hoping this can be an every-year thing so we can build on it.”
Each department at the church, located at 2610 N. Veterans Blvd., will be offering food and different items in their booths.
“We have singles, seniors, youth, Sunday school and the ladies’ auxiliary,” she said. “We want every department to be able to build up funds for outreach, church camps, the general conference.”
The day-long event, which lasts from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., will also feature outside vendors selling everything from wreaths, crocheted items and hair accessories to boutique clothing and purses, metal and wood items and cell phone accessories. There will also be a climbing wall and bouncy castles for the kids and a large yard sale.
“It will be kind of like a crafts show and flea market outside,” said Brenda Shackelford, who will be doing a lot of the cooking for the bake sale.
Various frozen casserole offerings include green bean, sweet potato, chicken and dressing, lasagna and squash, and prices will range from $8 to $20. Soups include beef stew, cheesy chicken noodle, and sausage gumbo and will sell for $10 to $12 a quart.
Layer cakes such as caramel apple, turtle, fresh coconut and chocolate will be priced from $20 to $35, and pecan, cherry cheese, chocolate mud and sweet potato pies will go for $12 to $15.
They’ll also have banana nut and whole wheat breads, muffins, coffee cakes, pound cakes and a brandied fruit cake, as well as candies, cookies, brownies, fudge and various sweet and savory cheese balls.
“We had a little one of these three years ago, but nothing this large,” Wright said. “For this year, we’d be happy to make $2,000.”
