A three-game sweep by Mooreville and a few inter-county matchups highlightd the first week of high school softball action in Lee County.
Mooreville opened the season with three high-scoring wins, 18-11 over Shannon, 16-2 over Itawamba AHS and 10-7 over Amory.
The Mooreville-Shannon game was the first of the all-Lee pairings. It included Saltillo's doubleheader sweep of Baldwyn and a Shannon victory over Saltillo.
Nettleton began the season with a 2-2 showing in the first week, with both losses coming against Kossuth.
Tupelo was the only team that didn't play last week. The Lady Wave were scheduled to begin their season Tuesday night against Pontotoc.
Mooreville 18, Shannon 11: The Lady Troopers rallied from a 9-4 deficit in the second to pull out the victory. Mooreville took the lead for good with five runs in the fifth to go ahead 14-11.
Lacy Malone had four hits and Casey Clouse, April Hicks, SueAne Dunnam and winning pitcher Lacee Wilburn had three apiece for Mooreville. April Mask led Shannon with three.
Kossuth 8, Nettleton 2: The Lady Tigers fell behind early and never could catch up as they dropped the first game of a three-game set at Kossuth.
Nettleton 7, Ripley 4: The Lady Tigers, led by Katie Williams and Lindsey Jackson, bounced back to win the second game. Williams and Jackson had two hits apiece.
Mooreville 16, IAHS 2: Mooreville recorded three 5-run innings en route to a five-inning win. Malone had a team high four hits while Charlene Davis drove in six runs with two doubles.
Saltillo 23, Baldwyn 0: Brandy Coggins got three hits, including a home run, as the Lady Tigers shut out the Lady Bearcats in the first game of a doubleheader.
Saltillo 13, Baldwyn 5: A seven-run sixth inning helped Saltillo break open a close game for the sweep. Samantha King led with three hits while Tabitha Pannell homered.
Nettleton 15, Tremont 3: The Lady Tigers wrapped up a four-inning with with eight runs in the fourth. Melissa Jones and Kim Shumpert each had three hits for Nettleton.
Kossuth 6, Nettleton 2: Nettleton only managed a pair of runs on six hits as it suffered its second loss to Kossuth.
Smithville 11, Shannon 9: After giving up seven runs in the first inning, Shannon tried to catch up but couldn't overtake the Lady Seminoles. Denita Ruff and Nikquetta Williams homered for Shannon.
Shannon 11, Saltillo 1: A six-run third inning lifted Shannon to its first win of the season in five innings. Winning pitcher Krissy Keith had three hits, including a home run. Nikquetta Williams also had three hits for Shannon.
Mooreville 10, Amory 7: The Lady Troopers fought off a Amory comeback - cutting the lead to two with a five-run fourth inning - for their third win. Alicia Smith led Mooreville with three hits.
Thursday - Amory at Shannon, Mooreville at Caledonia, Columbus at Nettleton, Ingomar at Nettleton, Mantachie at Saltillo, Columbus at Tupelo, Baldwyn at Wheeler.
Friday - Mooreville Tournament (rescheduled from Aug. 9, starts at 4 p.m.), Saltillo at Alcorn Central.
Saturday - New Site at Mooreville, Hamilton at Shannon, Thrasher at Baldwyn, Tishomingo County at Baldwyn.
Monday - Smithville at Shannon.
Tuesday - Saltillo at Kossuth, Nettleton at New Hope, Amory at Tupelo, Itawamba AHS at Tupelo, Mantachie at Baldwyn.
