Lee County 4-H members won a fistful of blue ribbons at the Northeast Mississippi District Livestock Show in West Point. H.S. Smith of Shannon swept virtually all the honors in the hog show. Other blue ribbon winners include Charles Trawick of Tupelo, Amelia Ruff of Tupelo, Janice Gay Campbell, Jane Johnson, Lee Johnson, Nancy Marion and the junior dairy judging team of Charles and Curtis Trawick, Jimmy Johnson and Gerald Estes.

About 700 people came out Sunday, March 28, in T-shirts, sweats and even a tuxedo for the 10-kilometer WalkAmerica trek for the March of Dimes. Some walkers listened to transistor radios, carried babies in strollers or solved Rubik's cubes to pass the time along the way. Pledges are still being totaled and will be announced early next week.

Nettleton's Portia Jones, described by her high school basketball coach as the Lady Tigers' "go-to girl," was named the Daily Journal's 1997 Girls Player of the Year. Jones, a 5-foot-9 senior forward, averaged 18.6 points and 12.2 rebounds per game for Nettleton (31-7), which advanced to the Class 2A state championship game.
