HAMILTON – The Mississippi Tobacco-Free Coalition of Itawamba and Monroe Counties recently awarded Ethan West, a seventh-grader at Hamilton Attendance Center, as the winner of the 2019 Generation FREE™ Design a FREE™ Fan Contest.
The 2019 Generation FREE™ Design a FREE™ Fan Contest was open to all Mississippi students in grades seven and eight. Students were asked to create a design for a fan that will be used at their school’s next sporting event. The fan design illustrated the dangers of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) and included a tobacco fact to spread the message of the dangers of ENDS, such as JUULs. A grand prize winner and honorable mentions were selected from the contestants.
Generation FREE™ provides a central youth-led outlet to connect, learn, share and inspire teenagers across the state of Mississippi to make a positive difference in their schools and communities.
Generation FREE™ is a program supported and funded through a grant from the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Office of Tobacco Control. Each year, Mississippi spends $1.23 billion on healthcare costs associated with tobacco use, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The goal of the MSDH Office of Tobacco Control is to improve the health of all Mississippians through the prevention of tobacco use and the elimination of exposure to secondhand smoke.
