NETTLETON – A field of four candidates to take the place of retiring Nettleton Police Chief A.D. Heard was narrowed to two following the town’s May 2 primary. The two top finishers – assistant police chief Joseph Beasley and Gary Monaghan – faced off again in the May 16 run-off, and Monaghan received the majority of the votes.

Monaghan had 266 votes, or 52 percent, compared to Beasley’s 245 votes, or 48 percent.

Monaghan is currently a Sgt. Major with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. He has served with the MCSO for the past six years.

For the Ward 2 aldermen race, incumbent GC Rhudy faced off against Jeff Finch. Finch received 122 votes, or 69 percent, compared to Rhudy’s 56 votes, or 31 percent.

Monaghan and Finch will be sworn in to office July 3.
