NETTLETON – A motor vehicle accident on the Highway 45 bypass April 6 claimed the life of a Shannon Primary School student.

According to Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley, Jyrea Ivy, 6, was the passenger in a Ford Mustang traveling in the southbound lanes. Gurley said Ivy was killed at the scene.

The car, driven by Nettleton High School senior Jamonte Guinis, collided with another vehicle in the northbound lanes near the intersection of Martin Luther King Avenue. The 911 call came in at 3:05 p.m.

Nettleton Police Chief Gary Monaghan said the Mustang pulled out in front of a truck pulling a box trailer, which overturned. The Mustang caught on fire. Authorities are unsure of which hospital the driver is receiving medical treatment.

The driver of the truck sustained injuries, according to Monaghan.

The Nettleton Police Department is investigating the accident.

Community Funeral Directors of Nettleton was placed in charge of Ivy's arrangements.

Monaghan set up an account to help Guinis' family with expenses through BancorpSouth. Donations can be made at any branch in Mississippi.
