Ingomar's Gara Beth Self has enjoyed a lot of firsts during her athletic and educational process and Wednesday she made another first as she became the first basketball signee for incoming ICC Women's Basketball Coach Robin Porter.
"When I called to tell Coach Porter that I was committing to ICC and that I was coming there next year, I didn't know at the time that she would get the head coaching job," Self said. "While I was on the phone with her, she told me that she was getting the job and that they would be telling everyone that next day.
"I was so excited for her and so for me to be her first official commit and signee is awesome! Honestly, the timing that I committed was so good and I didn't even mean for it to be. I love her and I can't wait to play for her. The more I talked to her, the more I wanted to play for her. "
Self had various reasons for choosing ICC, but another factor besides the coaching was the close proximity of the Fulton campus. Self wanted to be close enough that family and friends could come to her games and also be close enough to home that she could come back and spend time there.
"They have such a good program there and so that also was a big factor," Self said. "Coming from Ingomar, I wanted to be able to go to a college with a good program as well. Coach Porter was another huge reason I wanted to go there."
Self will also have some former AAU teammates playing with ICC and she is looking forward to reuniting with them.
"It will be cool for us to play together again," Self said.
