A portion of the Natchez Trace Parkway between Tupelo and Jackson is closed due to the collapse of a portion of the roadway adjacent to the Oldfield Creek Bridge near the Webster-Clay County line.
Stennis Young, a spokesman for the parkway, said workers were in the process of shoring up the banks of the creek around the bridge, which had been eroding, when the work caused a portion of the road leading up to the bridge to collapse. The bridge itself was not damaged, Young said.
Motorists will be detoured around the site until repairs are completed in about a month. The six-mile detour requires motorists to exit the Trace at Mississippi Highway 46, the Mantee/Montpelier exit, and re-enter on Mississippi Highway 15. Signs will mark the detour route.
