HED: Museum turns 30 later in June

From a bicentennial grant that helped open it in 1976 to a grant from the Gilmore Foundation to help expand it in 2006, the past 30 years have been dynamic for the Amory Regional Museum.
On June 27, the city of Amory will celebrate the birthday of one of Amory's gems with a birthday party on the front steps of the former Gilmore Sanitarium.
Amory Regional Museum staff members are working to finalize plans for the community-wide celebration that will begin at 10:30 a.m. According to museum director Lynn Millender, the morning's celebration will include guest speakers, exhibits and birthday cake.
"I hope everyone makes plans to attend and help us celebrate this very special occasion," Millender said.
Earlier this year Gilmore Foundation, Inc., the family foundation that opened the Gilmore Sanitarium, celebrated its 90th anniversary. The sanitarium operated until 1961 when it was moved to the current site of the Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center. The building now houses pieces of Amory and Mississippi history for those in the area to view.
