CORINTH - The Alcorn County Chapter of the American Red Cross is cooking up a sweet fundraiser.
The second annual "An Evening at Clara's Diner" will be held here Saturday at Gilmore's restaurant in the Shiloh Ridge Golf Course.
Named for Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross, the gala begins at 6:30 p.m. and will include dining, dancing and a silent auction. The Gents will provide musical entertainment.
"Last year's event was the first of this type for the local Red Cross office," said the agency's new director Gwen M. Spain. "Everyone had a great time and it was a huge success because of the strong support given by so many businesses and individuals in the community. We look forward to an even bigger event this year."
Proceeds from the fundraiser will allow the Red Cross to help victims of fires, floods, storms and other natural disasters in Alcorn and Tippah counties.
The Alcorn County chapter was recently approved to extend services into Tippah County, Spain said.
"Now we begin to raise funds for use there as well," she said.
The local Red Cross does not receive any government funding. "It is only through the generosity of people in our area that we are able to provide this help when it is needed," Spain said.
One of the major items in this year's silent auction is a charter flight for six people to anywhere within 500 air miles of Corinth. The trip has been donated by Richards Aviation.
Advance tickets are $25 per person and may be purchased from board members or at the Red Cross Office at 401 Cruise Street. To make a reservation, call the chapter at 286-6441 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $30 per person.
