Baldwyn man killed

in one-vehicle wreck

A Baldwyn man was killed early Sunday in a one-vehicle wreck on Highway 370.

At approximately 12:35 a.m., William T. Surratt, 33, left the roadway in his 1993 GMC, overturned and flipped several times, according to reports from the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Surratt was not wearing a seatbelt, and was ejected from the vehicle. There were no other injuries.

The wreck remains under investigation.

Gov. Musgrove awards CAP loan to Pontotoc

Gov. Ronnie Musgrove recently announced the latest Capital Improvements Revolving Loan Program loan awarded to the city of Pontotoc.

"The state of Mississippi is working to make a tangible difference in the lives of our citizens," Musgrove said. "Through funding opportunities, like the CAP loan program, we are impacting community development and building partnerships that will shape the state's economy for years to come."

Pontotoc receives CAP loan funds through the Community Development Block Grant program for $243,906 for the purchase of a fire truck.

CDBG is a program of the Community Services Division of the Mississippi Development Authority.

Guardsmen collect toys, clothing for the needy

CALHOUN CITY - The National Guard Armory will conduct its 12th annual "A Christmas to Remember" program for needy families.

Last year, 148 needy children in Calhoun County received food, clothing and toys through donations from the public.

To receive assistance, families must be residents of Calhoun County, must provide documented evidence that they are receiving government aid or assistance or they must present a letter from their church, signed by their pastor requesting that assistance be given.

The letter should be on church letterhead, or, if no letterhead is available, it must contain as a minimum the church and pastor's name and telephone number.

The distribution date has been set for 1 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Calhoun City National Guard Armory. Food, clothing and toys can be brought from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until Dec. 20 to the Bruce or Calhoun City armories.

Financial donations can be brought to the People's Bank and Trust in Calhoun City until Dec. 19. For more information, contact the Calhoun City Armory at 662-628-5812.


Brother accidentally shoots, kills sister

JACKSON - A 10-year-old Jackson girl died Saturday after her 15-year-old brother accidentally shot her at their south Jackson home, police said, citing a preliminary investigation.

Chynna Smith, 10, was shot in the abdomen, Jackson Police Department spokesman Robert Graham said.

Chynna was transported to Central Mississippi Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said.

No charges were immediately filed Saturday against the 15-year-old, who was taken into police custody for questioning, Graham said. Police would not identify the teen.
