FURRS - In an effort to comfort children at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis, a local youth group is collecting teddy bears and blankets to be distributed during the Christmas season.

"This is our youth department's first year to do a Christmas project," said Micah Lambert, youth director at Furrs Baptist Church. "We were trying to think of an idea, and we knew several children here had to use the services at Le Bonheur."

One child had been in a car accident, he said, and had to undergo surgery. Another child had an asthma attack so severe he had to be airlifted to Le Bonheur. When a project benefiting Le Bonheur was suggested, he said, the youth department instantly agreed.

"We wanted to give them comfort things," Lambert said. "We thought teddy bears were comforting. A lot of the children have to wear open gowns, and the lap blankets will help with that."

The group is collecting new teddy bears and fleece blankets, Lambert said, and hopes to have enough collected by Dec. 14 to give a bear and blanket to each child at the hospital.

"The manager at Hancock (Fabrics) has marked down the section of fleece," Lambert said. "People can go in and buy a yard of fleece, and if they don't sew, if they leave it at the store, we will pick it up and surge (the borders)."

Drop-off points are also available at Boyd's Flowers & Gifts, The Golden Needle and Furrs Baptist Church. Donations can also be shipped to Bears & Blankets, care of Furrs Baptist Church, 9011 Hwy. 6 E., Pontotoc MS 38863.

"If someone lives outside this area ... we can negotiate a pick-up," he said.

Lambert said approximately 200-300 bears and blankets are needed before Dec. 14.
