Hunting-related accident claims teen's life

n A 16-year-old boy was killed in a hunting-related accident on Saturday, the opening day for deer hunting with guns, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

The incident happened in the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge in Winston County at about sundown Saturday, said Clark McMinn, an official with MDWFP.

Officers with the department and the Noxubee Refuge are continuing to investigate the incident. The investigators believe the boy's fatality is an accident, and they "have no reason to think otherwise," he said.

Warning sirens

slated for testing

n AMORY - Utility employees have installed the city's new siren warning system on telephone poles throughout town.

Residents should be ready for its loud siren when it's tested soon to warn them about emergencies from severe weather to toxic spills.

The new system was funded by a Gilmore Foundation grant of $153,112.

The system can deliver spoken messages and can be operated from the E911 office in Aberdeen or the fire department.

Gun club requests

lease renewal

n HOUSTON - The Natchez Trace Gun Club is requesting a 20-year lease renewal for the Houston Board of Aldermen on property currently used as an outdoor practice range.

Dr. Bill Stabler said the range needs repairs and the gun club is willing to fund them, but members want to be sure they will retain the use of the property.

The range is located in the Industrial Park next to the construction site of the new county jail. Board members said they wanted to check the location to make sure there would not be a conflict with the traffic from the jail. They also said they would like to consider a shorter-term lease for incoming businesses.
