BRUCE - Bruce Mayor Pat Hendrix resigned at March's regularly scheduled board meeting March 4.

Hendrix recently bought a home in Grenada and said she planned to apply for homestead exemption on the home, said Bruce City Clerk Mildred Bray.

"Her letter of resignation said there were some doubters of her residency and for the doubters she was resigning," Bray said of the letter presented to the Bruce Board of Aldermen March 4.

Mississippi law requires elected officials to live in the areas in which they represent and that homeowners live in the homes for which they claim homestead exemption.

In Hendrix's place, Mayor pro tempore and Ward 1 Alderman Robert Edward Oakley was appointed by the board as interim mayor. Oakley has not qualified to run for mayor or Ward 1 alderman, Bray said.

Hendrix earlier resigned from the Bruce Chamber of Commerce.
