TUPELO • A building under construction adjacent to the recently opened Brooks Grocery store in west Tupelo will add a trio of tenants.
The first is a larger commercial kitchen to service the deli/hot foods department inside Brooks.
"We just can't keep up," said store owner Brooks Davis of the current setup.
The pharmacy that was originally going to be part of the store but not included because there wasn't enough space will find a home in the expanded space.
But the biggest news may be that a restaurant specializing in hamburgers will also occupy the building. An early version of this story stated that Mitch McCamey, of Neon Pig and Kermit's Soul Food Kitchen fame, would be behind the effort, but McCamey said he is not involved.
The Brooks Grocery, which opened in July, is the third store for the company. The original store opened in Iuka 11 years ago, and a store in Chapel Hill, Tennessee, opened last September.
The Tupelo store occupies most of the main building next to the expansion. Tupelo Wine & Spirits also has opened in the building, and Magnolia Soap & Bath is working on a space. A Mexican restaurant is in the planning stages as well, along with a nail salon.
The commercial kitchen for Brooks Grocery is needed for the store's popular Made Right Here" items and for La La's Kitchen. La La's, which is the name of the deli, uses some 128 family recipes that are sold in the bakery and deli.
