Calhoun circuit court ends session

Suspended sentences, probation common as prisons fill.

PITTSBORO - Circuit court officials finished a grueling two weeks of work in Calhoun County on Friday, acting on a host of cases ranging from drug offenses to the stabbing of a child by her father.

Drug crimes common

As is true in almost every jurisdiction, many of Calhoun Circuit Court's cases this time dealt with drug charges.

Yona Tutor, 39, 228 C.R. 5, Houlka, pled guilty to possession of marijuana. Tutor's one-year prison sentence was suspended in favor of probation.

Noel Nichols, 30, 224, C.R. 5, Houlka, received a three-year suspended sentence with three years of probation for his guilty plea to possession of marijuana.

Billy Bobo, 24, P.O. Box 869, Bruce, pled guilty to possession of marijuana and was sentenced to three years in the custody of the Miss. Dept. of Corrections (MDOC), along with a $2,500 fine.

Wayne Harris, 44, 1460 Hwy. 9S, Calhoun City, was sentenced to 20 years in prison with 5 suspended and 15 to serve after Judge Kenneth Coleman declined the defendant's move to withdraw a guilty plea to sale of marijuana.

Harris also faces three years' post-release probation and a $10,000 fine.

Shannon Looney, 25, 12836 C.R. 211, Oakland, pled guilty to possession of anhydrous ammonia and possession of precursors with intent (used in making methamphetamine). His 15-year sentence was suspended, with five years of probation substituted.

Jonathan West, 29, 803 N. Main St., Vardaman, also received a 15-year suspended sentence and five years' probation for his guilty plea to possession of anhydrous ammonia and possession of precursors with intent.

Cecil Stone, 31, P.O. Box 148, Bruce, pled guilty to possession of methamphetamine. Sentenced to four years, his faces a four-year probation in lieu of his suspended prison term.

Damon Campbell, 22, P.O. Box 275, Calhoun City, received five years, suspended, with three years of probation after pleading guilty to possession of cocaine.

Rhonda McMahan, 37, 644 Old Hickory Road, Grenada, had her probation revoked after being arrested for possession of cocaine and for testing positive for cocaine. The prior conviction was also for possession of cocaine.

Shirley Lee, 36, P.O. Box 409, Calhoun City, pled guilty to possession of cocaine (reduced from sale of cocaine). Her five-year sentence was suspended, and she was given five years' probation.

Roy C. Duff, 43, P.O. Box 363, Bruce, pled guilty to the sale of cocaine. Five years of his 10-year sentence were suspended, with five years to serve.

Shannon White, 43, 949 Hwy. 32W, Water Valley, received a five-year suspended sentence with three years' probation. White pled guilty to possession of marijuana (less than one ounce) with intent, reduced from sale of marijuana (less than one ounce).

Steve Jones, 31, P.O. Box 115, Calhoun City, pled guilty to sale of a controlled substance (reduced from sale of a controlled substance habitual offender). He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with 11 suspended and four to serve, consecutive to a sentence he is currently serving. He also was levied a $1,000 fine and five years' post-release supervision.

Property crimes

Crimes against property were also numerous in Calhoun County's recent court session.

Kristen Dawn Ayers, 18, 137, N. Cotton Blvd., Big Creek, pled guilty to a charge of accessory to burglary (reduced from burglary of a dwelling) and received two years' probation in lieu of a seven-year suspended sentence.

Ronnie Willis, 35, 170 Holmes Dr., Vardaman, pled guilty to uttering a forgery under habitual offender codes. Willis' 10-year sentence, with eight suspended and two to serve with MDOC, will be consecutive to a term he is already serving for another crime.

Betty Gordon, 19, 1185 Hwy. 32E, Water Valley, was handed a three-year suspended sentence and three years' probation for her guilty plea to grand larceny.

David Allen Cooper, 23, P.O. Box 1301, Calhoun City, received seven years in prison (suspended) and five years' probation after pleading guilty to burglary.

Gloria Ann Mays, 37, P.O. Box 905, Calhoun City, pled guilty to accessory after the fact of burglary and received a three-year suspended sentence, with three years of probation.

John Dye, 34, P.O. Box 1306 Calhoun City, received a seven-year sentence that was commuted to time served along with five years of probation for the crime of burglary.

Kelly Jones, 19, Edmondson Manor, Apt. 1, Derma, pled guilty to uttering a forgery and was sentenced to five years in prison (suspended) and five years of probation.

Charlie Gray, 32, P.O. Box 905, Calhoun City, was sentenced to five years (suspended; commuted to time served) and five years' probation after pleading guilty to accessory after the fact of burglary.

Robert Gordon, 24, 100 W. Countiss St., Bruce, faces five years in prison (with two suspended, three to serve) and two years of post-release supervision. A previous probation for robbery simple by violence was revoked, and the new sentence will be consecutive to a sentence Gordon is already serving.

Dustin Ward., 19, 110 Moore Dr., Calhoun City, pled guilty to grand larceny and was given a five-year prison sentence, with four and one-half years suspended and six months to serve.

Samuel Wayne Bean, 32, 37 Doake St., Grenada, pled guilty to two counts of burglary of a dwelling. He was sentenced to 15 years (10 suspended, five to serve) consecutive with a sentence he is currently serving from a previous crime in Grenada County.

Barry Daniels, 45, P.O. Box 75, Bruce, pled guilty to two counts of uttering a forgery. His 10-year suspended sentence was commuted to one year of house arrest and five years of probation.

Glen Chairse, 20, P.O. Box 1283, Calhoun City, pled guilty to auto burglary. His five-year sentence was suspended in favor of three years' probation.

John E. Wright, 29, 354 Enochs Dr., Calhoun City, received a five-year suspended sentence and three years' probation after pleading guilty to false pretenses.

Stephanie Walker Wright, 32, 3534, Enochs Dr., Calhoun City, likewise pled guilty to false pretenses. She received an identical three years' probation and a five-year suspended sentence.

Tiffany Allred, 19, 22 Shanda Ridge, Pontotoc, was convicted of burglary of a dwelling. Her 10-year sentence was suspended in favor of one year of house arrest.

Crime against persons

Offenses that either physically harmed or threatened their victims finish the list of crimes in Calhoun County's circuit court session.

Courtney Davidson, 20, P.O. Box 769, Bruce, received a 10-year sentence with seven suspended and three to serve for a guilty plea to aggravated assault. Davidson's sentence is consecutive to a current sentence and is punctuated by a $1,000 fine.

Michael Stephens, 18, 554 Hwy. 32E, Bruce, pled guilty to robbery simple by fear. His 10-year sentence will be suspended if he successfully completes one year in the MDOC Regimented Inmate Discipline program.

Clovis Lynn McCormick, 31, 30 C.R. 175, Randolph, pled guilty to aggravated assault in the stabbing of his 3-year-old daughter, who survived the attack.

He was sentenced to 20 years with 10 suspended and 10 to serve and was ordered to undergo mental counsel and treatment at the dhe MDOC.
