clean-up effort for Saturday
By Philip Moulden
Tupelo's fourth annual Fall Clean Up Day is set for Saturday and supporters urged all residents to use the opportunity to dispose of unwanted materials and improve the city's appearance.
The city will set up two sites for residents to dispose of virtually all kinds of litter and rubbish, including household hazardous materials, Boyd Yarbrough, with Tupelo Clean and Beautiful, said.
The city also conducts a similar waste collection effort each spring, Yarbrough noted.
A downtown drop off center will be located at the parking lot on the corner of Main Street and Front Street while a second collection point will be established in the Veterans Memorial Park ball field parking lot off Veterans Boulevard.
The locations will be staffed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Items accepted will include litter, trash and various wastes including old tires, batteries, appliances, pesticides and herbicides, paints, and similar materials.
"It's been growing every year. That's why we expanded to two locations ... to encourage participation," Yarbrough said.
Neighborhood groups were being encouraged to pick up along roads and streets and to clean up other public areas, he said.
Yarbrough said the Presley Heights Garden Club is coordinating efforts to clean the Presley Heights areas and similar organizations have been asked to perform like duties throughout the city.
Trash bags and litter bags will be available at both waste collection locations to aid people in their efforts, officials said.
Yarbrough said that most of the increase in participation has come from individuals who are cleaning up their own properties. He said this year he hopes more groups will form to pick up trash in public areas.
A second cleanup day has been scheduled next weekend in Haven Acres with the assistance of that area's neighborhood association, he said.
