Freshman paces Rebels

in exhibition shellacking

OXFORD Freshman Trey Pearson scored 18 points as Mississippi defeated West Alabama 97-35 in an exhibition game Saturday.

The Rebels had six players score in double figures and shot 52 percent.

Pearson, who the Rebels hope will become their point guard this season, was 8-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-3 on 3-pointers.

Justin Johnson had 17 points and Derrick Allen had 14. Aaron Harper, Jonathan Loe and John Gunn each added 10 points.

Ole Miss led 39-7 at half.

Bulldogs spread it around

in first preseason test

STARKVILLE - Six players put up double-digit scoring numbers, as Mississippi State crushed Branch West Basketball Academy 80-56 in the Bulldogs' exhibition opener Saturday night.

Marcus Campbell led the way with 14 points off the bench to go with 10 rebounds. Timmy Bowers had 13 points for Mississippi State, while Michal Ignerski had 11 points and 11 boards.

Derrick Zimmerman and Winsome Frazier also tossed in 11 for the Bulldogs, while Ontario Harper added 10.

The 'Dogs led just 32-26 at halftime but shot 50 percent in the second half.

Wimmer wins race,

but Biffle clinches title

AVONDALE, Ariz. Scott Wimmer won the Basha's Supermarket 200 under a yellow flag, but this was Greg Biffle's day.

Biffle clinched the NASCAR Busch Series championship on Saturday, leading all but the last 16 laps of the 200-lap race at Phoenix International Speedway. He wound up third, just ahead of series runner-up Jason Keller.

Biffle is the only driver to have won titles in both the Busch and Craftsman Truck Series (2000) and has given team owner Jack Roush his only NASCAR championships.


Bonds, Giambi blast off

against Japanese champs

TOKYO Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi hit back-to-back homers twice Saturday, leading the major league all-stars to an 8-1 exhibition win over the Japan Series champion Yomiuri Giants.

Ex-Cowboy White to speak at Conerly awards dinner

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Danny White is slated to be the keynote speaker at the 2002 Conerly Trophy awards dinner on Dec. 5.

White, currently head coach and general manager of the Arena Football League's Arizona Rattlers, led the Cowboys to three NFC title game appearances and still holds 22 team records.

He's led the Rattlers to two Arena League world championships in his 11 seasons in Arizona.
