CORINTH - A March 20 shooting incident involving a state narcotics officer will go before an Alcorn County grand jury.

Initial reports from investigators indicate the shooting was accidental; however, District Attorney John Young said he plans to take the case before a grand jury as a matter of policy.

"The grand jury should hear the whole case," Young said.

Philephia Deon "Flop" Davis of Corinth was grazed by a bullet from the gun of Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Agent Jeff Palmer, who was trying to arrest him on a drug-related charge, Young said.

When Palmer and an Alcorn County sheriff's deputy initially tried to arrest Davis, he fled, and Palmer and the deputy pursued him.

Davis and Palmer got into a struggle and ended up fighting for control of Palmer's firearm when Davis was shot, according to investigators' reports, Young said.

Davis, who was treated and released from the hospital the same day as the incident, has been charged with resisting arrest and assault on an officer.
