CORINTH - An organization that hopes to alleviate animal control problems in Corinth and Alcorn County has received its charter of incorporation from the state.

Barbara Ryder, secretary of the newly formed Corinth/Alcorn County Humane Society, said members will be asked to vote to ratify the charter at the next meeting set for 7 p.m. March 18 at the Alliance office. The public is invited to attend.

The local group was organized under the rules and regulations of the National Humane Society, Ryder said. In accordance with the national guidelines, a permanent slate of officers will be elected at that meeting. Charlotte Barnes-Watts currently serves as president, and Gina Paulette Wallace is treasurer.

The group has already had fund-raisers to help pay legal expenses involved with the incorporation effort. Future campaigns will target spaying, neutering and inoculation of pets, Ryder said.

"We also hope to promote adoption of animals," she said. Although the chapter does not have a shelter, Ryder said members have already been at work placing abandoned cats and dogs in foster homes until adoptive homes can be found.

Getting organized and obtaining the charter and tax-exempt status has taken quite of bit of funding and time, Ryder said.

But anything worthwhile is worth the time it takes, she said.

A group of about 25-30 people has been working toward incorporation since an organizational meeting Dec. 4, 1995, said Jimmy Spain, who helped spearhead the drive.

"It has been a combined effort of many people," He said.

The need for animal control is growing with the growth of the city and county, Spain said.

The society does not have any immediate plans to set up a shelter. Instead, the society plans to approach the city, which does have a small shelter, to coordinate animal control efforts, Ryder said.

"We will take things one step at a time," she said.

Individuals interested in joining the society can call Ryder at 286-7188 or Barnes-Watts at 284-9738. Annual dues are $10.

Tax-deductible donations can be mailed to The Corinth/Alcorn County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1351, Corinth, MS 38834. The society will gratefully acknowledge honorariums and memorials, Ryder said.
