Charles Garner

TUPELO • The search for a missing Plantersville man ended Wednesday afternoon with the discovery of a body in the area south of Tombigbee State Park.

The family of Charles "Mutton" Garner, 47, of Cedar Street, Plantersville, said he was last seen Friday, Jan. 7. A Drive 986 man hunting on his land off Jan. 8 found two wallets and clothing as he walked out of the woods. One wallet had an ID card and $110 in cash inside it.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said deputies and a Baldwyn police investigator went to the area searching for Garner. The initial search of the area by deputies did not turn up anyone.

Officials launched a more extensive search of the area using ATVs and drones on Jan. 12. The body was discovered just before noon Wednesday.

Garner's maroon 1997 Ford pickup was found at 2:30 p.m. the same day stuck in the mud in a pasture off County Road 1010, less than a mile east of where the wallet was found.

Johnson said there were no signs of foul play found. Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green said there was no obvious cause of death.

The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Pearl for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
