TUPELO – A two-car wreck on Cliff Gookin Boulevard claimed the life of Tupelo man Wednesday afternoon.

According to Tupelo Police and Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green, the Chevrolet Corvette driven by Hal Veal Jr., 69, of Tupelo, crossed the center line of the five-lane road around 5 p.m. and collided with a Chevrolet Camaro about a quarter-mile east of the intersection of Cliff Gookin and South Thomas Street. Green said that Veal was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.

The female driver of the Camaro was transported to the North Mississippi Medical Center. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Tupelo Police Capt. Tim Clouse said several eye witnesses gave statements to the police about the wreck, but he could not divulge any information about the direction or speeds of the vehicles.

“It is still under investigation,” said Clouse. “About all I can say is one vehicle lost control and struck the other one.

“We will come out later this week and reconstruct the accident. Then we will be able to say more.”
