PONTOTOC – If you are a parent with a child under 5 years old you are invited to a very special meeting every second Monday night at the Pontotoc County Library.
Under the Pear Tree, or UP, is an event where families can come together for a night of reading and activities that will help their children prepare for kindergarten.
“The Mississippi Kindergarten Readiness assessment scores indicate that reading readiness needs to be greatly improved if children are going to be successful,” said Christi Littlejohn who is spearheading the event.
The first kick-off celebration meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12.
Littlejohn said she got the idea for the format of her event from a community in Louisiana.
“Their test scores were low, so they started hosting this once a month event in different churches,” she said.
Each session will begin with a light dinner followed by a children’s story and then family activities.
Littlejohn said that anyone who wants to help with the monthly meeting is invited to come.
“We need volunteers to supply the supper, to come read, to help with activities and people to come and take advantage of this activity for their children.”
Tips for wellness, parenting, reading readiness and kindergarten preparation will be given at these sessions.
Every family participating will receive a copy of the story that is being highlighted so the children can build their own library at home.
“And speaking of books, we also need books donated for the families to carry home with them,” Littlejohn said.
