TUPELO - A two-week membership campaign has done wonders for ExPECT.
"We started out with 20 members and now we have 166," said Bobby Richardson, co-president of Exceptional Progress in Education through Curriculum and Technology. "This has gone beyond our expectations. I am very pleased with the response we have gotten so far."
ExPECT is a nonprofit organization that funds teacher grants in the Lee County schools. Its membership drive began March 19 and ends today, but you can still join for as little as $10, co-president Lynn Keith said. Other membership levels are $20 and $50.
"We have new members from every campus in the district, but there is always room for more," Keith said. "We are very excited about this number of increased members."
The group plans a Lee County Schools Showcase from 11-3 Saturday at The Mall at Barnes Crossing. Choirs and cheerleaders will perform, and emcee for the event will be Craig Horton from Sunny 93.3.
In addition, Richardson said the showcase will feature members of the Mississippi MudCats and MudKittens. He also said the MudCats' Crawford Foundation has arranged for the MudCats to give away 12 sets of family packets of tickets.
Richardson said the purpose of the rally is to increase membership and community involvement.
"The funds we receive go back to the teachers in forms of grants," he said. "ExPECT's goal is to try to fund 100 percent of the grants submitted for the next school year."
