TUPELO - John Robbins, owner of Verona-based Robbins Oil Co., wants to capitalize on Fairpark District's growth with a new convenience store and deli at the southeast corner of Elizabeth and Main streets, next to the Renasant Center for IDEAs.
Even though his Fairpark choice reflects the area's new and upcoming status, Robbins said he wanted to be a part of the district for sentimental reasons: In 1938, his grandfather, Vardaman Robbins, started the Robbins Oil Co. at that intersection.
The store will be named "Papa V's" and Robbins said it will be a "very nice looking facility that will fit into the area."
"It's not your standard cookie cutter convenience store," he insisted.
The store is expected to have several gas pumps and offer a variety of prepackaged and fresh food items, but Robbins declined to give any more details.
Robbins said he's been working on the land deal for the past year and a half, and he still needs several city permits.
If all goes well, he hopes to start building this year, but he isn't sure about a completion date.
"With the new Toyota place, all the contractors are going to be busy, so we figure it's going to be difficult to get help," he predicted.
