Former Aberdeen Mayor William "Tizzy" Tisdale died Thursday morning at Pioneer Community Hospital in Aberdeen after a long battle with cancer. He was 83.
Tisdale served his first term as mayor from 1972-1976. He served a second and third term from 1996-2004.
"This is a sad day for the citizens of Aberdeen upon hearing about the passing of Mayor 'Tizzy' Tisdale," said Aberdeen Mayor Jim Ballard. "He truly cared about the people of this town and was sincere about its growth. He was not only the Mayor but a friend to each of us. I appreciate and respect the information about Aberdeen that he shared prior to my election and as well as the pass three years.
According to those who worked closely with Tisdale, he will be remembered as "pioneer for Aberdeen."
"I worked eight years with Mayor Tisdale and he was a pioneer for Aberdeen," said Jackie Benson, City of Aberdeen Clerk. "He was very instrumental in forming our Main Street organization, bringing Wendy's to town, bringing Tom Soya to the port — he really did a lot of things for the city. He was like family to me and I will miss him greatly."
Tisdale was also a longtime Monroe County business owner. He purchased Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen in 1959 and Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Nettleton in 1963. Both began operating under the name Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in 1997.
Former Aberdeen alderman Jim Buffington said his friend will be greatly missed.
"I cannot imagine Aberdeen without Tizzy. He was a natural for business and industrial development and contributed far more in this area than most of us realize," said Buffington. "He and I were friends from the moment I arrived in Aberdeen, in 1955. When serving as mayor, he always kept that cool demeanor of his — always — and was always 'in charge' at meetings of the board of aldermen. There will never be another William Tisdale."
Visitation for Tisdale will be held Friday, December 31, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral home. A funeral will follow at 1 p.m.
