TUPELO – City Council President Fred Pitts of Ward 2 told a crowd of some 75 people on Wednesday that he'll run for mayor in 2013.

"I want to continue to advance Tupelo to be the best it can be in all regards," said Pitts, speaking in the lobby of the Convention & Visitors Bureau downtown.

Pitts is the first to enter the mayor's race after the Nov. 4 announcement that current Mayor Jack Reed Jr. won't seek a second term.

Other possible candidates include Ward 1 Councilman Markel Whittington, Ward 6 Councilman Mike Bryan and former At-Large Councilwoman and past mayoral candidate Doyce Deas. All told the Daily Journal they're still mulling the decision to run.

Pitts, a 69-year-old Republican, is currently serving out his first term as a councilman.
