FUGITIVE RETURNED AFTER TWO YEARS

WEST POINT - A man who escaped from the Clay County Jail more than two years ago was back in custody in Mississippi Thursday.

Jason Starks, 21, was returned to West Point Thursday. Starks, who had been living and working in Illinois, was picked up by authorities there and held until he was extradited to Northeast Mississippi, a Clay County sheriff's dispatcher said. Authorities were able to find him using a Social Security number.

In 1993, Starks, then of the White Station community, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault in connection with the shootings of two employees of City Gun and Pawn in West Point during a possible robbery attempt. The woman and her grandson, who were shot in the face, survived the attack.

Starks was captured the day after the shooting but escaped jail within months of being caught.
