Funeral set for Ole Miss law dean

OXFORD - Funeral services and visitation for Louis Westerfield, dean of the University of Mississippi School of Law, will be in New Orleans Friday and Saturday.

Westerfield, 47, died of an apparent heart attack Saturday while attending a conference of judges from Mississippi and Louisiana at New Orleans.

Services will be at Dillard University Chapel, 2601 Gentilly Blvd. at noon Saturday.

Visitation is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Southern University of New Orleans Chapel at 6400 Press Drive. Visitation also is set for 10 a.m. Saturday

University officials have arranged bus transportation to New Orleans for the funeral. The university is also planning a memorial service, but details have not been finalized.

Westerfield, who became head of the law school in 1994, was the first African-American dean in the university's history. He is survived by his wife Gelounder and three children.

Memorial donations may be made to the Louis Westerfield Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Mississippi Foundation, P.O. Box 249, University, MS 38677.
