GUNTOWN - A Pontotoc man died Sunday after he was accidentally shot while cleaning and repairing a gun.

Thomas W. Stewart, 31, was attempting to repair a safety mechanism on a .380-caliber automatic handgun about 1:20 p.m. Sunday at a residence in Guntown when the gun discharged a single shot, striking Stewart in the abdomen, said Lee County Sheriff's Department Investigator Jim Johnson.

Stewart was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center, where he died later Sunday night, Johnson said.

After an investigation by the sheriff's department and the Lee County Coroner's Office, the shooting has been ruled accidental, Johnson said.
