Police and Mississippi Highway Patrol officials are still investigating the Saturday afternoon drive-by shooting that left one dead and three others injured in a parking lot at the Mall at Barnes Crossing.
An autopsy ordered by Lee County Coroner Roy Barnett revealed that 19-year-old Lester Young of 454 CR 8061, Booneville, died of a single gunshot wound that entered his back, went through his heart and aorta and exited his chest.
While no bystanders were injured in the spray of gunfire, three men who were with Young were taken to North Mississippi Medical Center with gunshot wounds.
Felix Shumpert, 25, of Route 1, Box 90, Booneville, was in very stable condition Sunday night with wounds to the head and one leg.
Joshua Leach, 18, of 106 Martin Luther King Drive, Booneville, and Jamie Williams, 19, of Rienzi (no address available), had each been discharged after treatment for leg wounds.
Investigators are not yet releasing any information about possible suspects or motives for the shooting. Mall manager Jeff Snyder, though, said it appeared to result from an ongoing conflict between two groups.
"This was not a random thing, where people are just going around shooting into crowds," Snyder said. "From what I understand, the groups knew each other and had a grudge. This could have happened anywhere.
"It's a tragedy that this happened, and I feel bad that these casualties occurred," he added, "but we are relieved that no other people outside the groups involved were hurt in the incident."
Snyder was also concerned about a fast-moving rumor that people were shot inside the Mall at Barnes Crossing.
"I want people to realize that is definitely not true."
