HED: Corinth patient dies in stairwell fall
By Michaela Gibson Morris
CORINTH - Officials have ruled out homicide in death of a Magnolia Regional Health Center patient who fell in a hospital stairwell Wednesday morning.
Patricia A. Phillips, 58, of Route 4, Corinth, fell to her death from the fifth floor to the fourth floor in the rarely used west stairwell of the original nursing tower at Magnolia Regional, Corinth Police Chief Fred Johnson said.
Investigators are still working to determine if her death was an accident or suicide, Johnson said.
Hospital officials called police just after 8 a.m. to report a missing patient. Shortly thereafter, a hospital security guard found Phillips body in the stairwell.
An autopsy is planned, but no information was available Wednesday night about when it would be scheduled, Johnson said. Investigators are still trying to establish the time frame of the incident.
Hospital officials were waiting for the investigation to conclude before making in-depth public statements about the incident.
"It is in the hands of law enforcement officials to investigate," said Don Dalton, hospital spokesman. Dalton confirmed Phillips was a patient but declined further comment to avoid hampering the investigation.
No information was available about the condition Phillips was being treated for.
