CORINTH - A runoff will be held next Tuesday to determine who will fill a vacancy on the Corinth Board of Aldermen.
Charlie Gooch Jr. led a five-man field, but did not receive a majority of the votes cast in Tuesday's special election.
Gooch received 330, or 28 percent, of the vote. He will face Jerry W. Porter in the runoff. Porter received 255 votes to capture the second-place spot.
Voter turnout was light, with only 1,700 voters - less than 15 percent of those registered - participating in the special election. There are about 8,000 registered voters in the city of Corinth.
Other candidates and their vote counts were: John Hall, 215; Jimmy Mitchell, 147; and Milton W. Walker, 223.
The Ward 1 seat was declared vacant Aug. 20, 1996, when former alderman Billy Smith resigned to pursue employment opportunities out of the state.
Corinth's aldermen are elected at-large.
Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. for the runoff election.
The regularly scheduled meeting of the board of aldermen has been postponed because of the election.
