HED:Leonard gets 14 years for manslaughter
A Lee County woman was sentenced Friday to serve 14 years in jail for fatally shooting her husband in February 1996.
Brandy Leonard, 28, pleaded guilty in March to manslaughter in the death of her ex-husband Fred Leonard, 35, at the Lakewood Estates trailer they were sharing during an attempt to reconcile, according to Lee County Sheriff's Department reports.
At the Lee County Justice Center, 17th District Circuit Court Judge George Carlson handed down a 20-year sentence with six years suspended for Leonard, who was originally charged with murder in the case. Twenty years is the maximum sentence for a manslaughter conviction.
With credit for time already served, Leonard will be eligible for parole after serving about 11 more years. Leonard has been held in the Lee County Jail since she was charged.
The case was prosecuted by the 17th District Attorney's Office because the 1st District Attorney's Office asked to be recused from the case. Brandy Leonard is the daughter of Assistant District Attorney Sam Reedy.
First District Circuit Court judges also removed themselves from the case for the same reason.
