HED: National organ donor quilt on display this week

The National Organ Donor Family Quilt will be on display at two locations in Tupelo this week.

More than 800 families have contributed to the quilt since the National Kidney Foundation's Donor Family Council began the project in 1995. Panels of the quilt travel throughout the United States to encourage organ donation and to honor those who have donated.

Each handmade quilt is made up of 8-inch squares of fabric individually designed by family members of organ and tissue donors. Many contain pieces of a loved one's clothing, mementos or special quotes.

Two 6-foot by 10-foot sections of the quilt will be on display from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. near the food courts at the Mall at Barnes Crossing and North Mississippi Medical Center.

The quilt's stops in Mississippi are being sponsored by the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency and the National Kidney Foundation of Mississippi.
