NEW ALBANY - Residents of this city now have a new thoroughfare on the south side of town.
Park Plaza Drive, which had previously dead-ended just east of the entry to the Wal-Mart Supercenter and its neighbors south of U.S. Highway 78, was opened Thursday afternoon in a ribbon-cutting ceremony by local and federal officials.
The new extension connects Mississippi Highway 30 with Bratton Road near the New Albany Sportsplex. Funding for the project was approved in 1995, with the Appalachian Regional Commission contributing $360,000, to which the city added $90,000.
"This road not only provides for the location of new businesses, sales tax revenues and jobs in this area, but it sets an example of government entities working together," said Nancy Knight, Mississippi's new ARC program director. "The ARC is proud to be a part of this expansion of economic opportunity."
New Albany Mayor Walter Johnson said he looked forward to improved traffic flow in a growing area of the city.
"It's going to disperse traffic that's been congested for a long time," he said.
