HED:Verona man to serve 25 years on assault charge

A Verona man was sentenced Friday to serve 25 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl at a south Tupelo discount store.

Lawrence D. Hull, 24, of 124 Money St., Verona, pleaded guilty to sexual battery and aggravated assault of a 9-year-old girl at Bud's Discount Center on South Gloster Street on March 9, 1997.

Circuit Court Judge Tommy Gardner sentenced Hull, a parolee from Arkansas, to 30 years, with 10 years suspended, for the sexual battery. He also sentenced Hull 10 years, with five years suspended, for the aggravated assault. The sentences are to be served consecutively.

Retired to the files were charges of burglary in connection with a April 1997 incident at Milam School where Hull was found hiding in a girls bathroom and an May 1997 escape from the Tupelo City Jail.

In addition to the prison sentence, Hull will have to pay court costs.
