Tupelo • Towns across the region will celebrate Memorial Day next Monday with services, speakers and events. Here’s a look at what’s planned in our coverage area:
Tupelo’s Memorial Day commemoration will be 9 a.m. at Veterans Park. This year’s event will feature U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly as the guest speaker.
In Amory, the Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at the Monroe County Veterans Memorial alongside Highway 278. Names on the monument of those who lost their lives while serving will be read by members of the Monroe County Veterans Association.
Meanwhile, Aberdeen’s program will be held at 10 a.m. at Odd Fellows Cemetery. The event is hosted by American Legion Post 26 and will feature Rubel West as the speaker, Taps, the National Anthem to be sung by Kelly Nash and a flag folding ceremony. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held at American Legion Post 26, located alongside Highway 145.
Following the ceremony, there will be a meal at the American Legion for anyone who wants to attend.
In Tippah County, the Memorial Day program will be held at the Fred Smith Memorial Park/The Peoples Bank Sportsplex at 11 a.m. Entertainment will be provided by Carleigh and Jason Fiveash. Barbecue plates are being sold for $10 to benefit the Tippah County Veterans Memorial Park.
Pontotoc’s Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Pontotoc Courthouse and Court Square. This year, U.S. Navy and World War II Veteran Thomas Edward Lucas will be the guest speaker for the ceremony.
