Lee County sheriff's deputies acting on a tip were able to catch two burglars in the act of breaking into a Tupelo bingo parlor early Tuesday morning.

Sheriff's deputies staked out the Vietnow bingo hall Monday night after receiving a tip that it would be burglarized, said Tupelo Police Chief Jerry Crocker.

"(The sheriff's department) told us they had the information," Crocker said. "But they already had people in place."

About 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, two men reportedly kicked in the back door at the bingo hall, but then fled when an alarm sounded, Crocker said.

Deputies arrested Jeff L. Deaton, 22, 203 Nanney Dr., and Joseph B. Williams, 135 Birmingham Ridge Road, Blue Springs, on charges of burglary. They were booked into the Tupelo City Jail. Bonds had not been set for the men.

The case was turned over to Tupelo police detectives for further investigation.
