AMORY – For safety purposes, the Amory Street Department made the decision Wednesday to temporarily close the bridge on Fairways Drive at Ackia Golf Course due to a sinkhole on one side.

“We’ve been consulting with engineers to see if it’s more cost-effective to repair it or replace it. All the rain just forced our hand in dealing with it,” said Mayor Brad Blalock.

According to Blalock, street department superintendent Jason Humber made the decision based upon safety concerns.

Barriers have been put in place on both sides of the bridge, and portions of the road have been closed to through traffic ahead of it.

All residences on the back side of the course are still accessible from Old Highway 25, and all other residences are accessible from the front entrance of the golf club located on Highway 278.

All cart paths are accessible as are all parts of the golf course itself, as the Ackia is still operational.

The city will be working closely with Monroe County, Tombigbee Water Management District and other agencies to expeditiously as possible resolve this issue.

According to Blalock, the city is unaware of any other sinkholes.
