Local option sales tax bill headed to full House

MADISON — The mayor of Madison, Miss., has changed her mind and says a resident will be allowed to keep two light-up peacocks on a roof as part of a Christmas display.

Earlier this week, a city code enforcement officer told Wanda Cheeks to take the peacocks off the roof of her home on Church Street. Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler said neighbors had complained about the sparkly blue birds.

Madison is a mostly upscale suburb of Jackson, known for local codes that limit the size of commercial signs and regulate the exterior look of buildings.

Some locals got their feathers ruffled about the peacock dispute.

On Thursday, Hawkins Butler public apologized to Cheeks and said the peacocks may stay. The Republican mayor said she learned the peacock is a symbol of Christ.
